Two JTCC alumni are enjoying successful starts to their 2023 spring college tennis seasons.
JTCC alumnus Andrew Fenty further cemented his name in the University of Michigan record books when he became the first Wolverine to record 100 career doubles wins after his 6-3 doubles victory over California Polytechnic State University on January 28.
The Washington, D.C. native notched another career milestone when he broke Evan King’s (Class of 2013) record and became the winningest Wolverine in program history with 196 combined victories in singles and doubles. Fenty surpassed King’s decade-long record with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Baylor on February 3.
Fenty was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on February 1, the sixth time he has earned the accolade. The award is just the latest in Fenty’s illustrious playing career. In 2019, Fenty won Big Ten Rookie of the Year and followed it up by winning Big Ten Player of the Year in 2020.
Fenty trained at JTCC from 2007-2018 as part of the Champs High Performance program and is mentored by JTCC Director of International Operations Asaf Yamin.
“This is an outstanding milestone for Andrew and a testament to his consistency, leadership, and growth,” Yamin stated. “He continues to support the JTCC players, and we are very proud of his success.”
Further south playing in her senior year at the University of South Carolina, Ayana Akli earned Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Week honors on January 25.
The Silver Spring native is currently #13 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings and earned her first win at South Carolina playing in the No. 1 position with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 triumph over #13 Alana Smith of North Carolina State.
Akli enters her senior year on the heels of being selected to the All-SEC First Team and being recognized as an SEC Academic Honor Roll and ITA Scholar Athlete selection in 2022.
For 19 years, the JTCC alumna trained at JTCC where her father, Oliver Akli, is the Senior Director of Coach Development.
