Daniel Dunac and James Scotty claim Boys’ crowns

Elisabeth Dunac dominated the Girls’ 12s USTA/MAS Championship Super 660 L4+ draw at the Green Spring Racquet Club in Lutherville, MD by winning all four of her matches in straight sets. Dunac, the third seed and #3 ranked USTA/MAS Girls’ 12s player, emerged as the champion after a comprehensive finals win over the fourth seed Alisa Danilova 6-1, 6-0.

Twelve-year old Robin Montgomery stormed to the Girls’ 16s title at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club, VA by beating four seeds in five matches on her way to the championship. Montgomery is stepping up the age groups after reaching #2 in the USTA Girls’ 12s national rankings during 2016. Her winning run included defeating the top seed, Caitie Sullivan, 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals before going on to beat #7 seed Annie Dong 7-6(4), 6-3 in the finals.

Lexi Merrill handled the pressure of being the top seed in the Girls’ 18 draw at Green Spring by recovering from dropping the opening set in the finals against the second seed Miranda Deng to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-0. Merrill, #2 ranked USTA/MAS Girls’ 18s player, made her way through to the finals in confident fashion after beating all four of her previous opponents in straight sets.

Fourteen-year old Daniel Dunac followed his younger sister’s lead as he overcame three seeds to secure the Boys’ 14s crown at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club. Dunac, the number five seed and #6 ranked USTA/MAS Boys’ 14s player, kept his composure to beat #2 seed Daniel Wen 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals before going on to win against seventh seed Siddharth Pande 7-5, 6-2 in the finals.

James Scotty worked his way through the Boys’ 18s draw at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, VA to book a finals meeting with #2 seed Chase Bernstine. Scotty, seeded fifth and #6 ranked USTA/MAS Boys’ 18s player, upset the form book by holding his nerve in the deciding set to claim the title as he won 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-2.

“All the players competed very hard in the Sectional Championships,” commented JTCC Senior Director of Tennis Vesa Ponkka. “We are delighted that JTCC students were able to win five out of the eight available titles.”
