Brian Cernoch and Andrew Fenty to make Junior Grand Slam debuts
Having the advantage of red clay courts to train on in their youth at JTCC—a rarity in the USA where green clay courts dominate— four JTCC standouts will slide their way through the main draws of the men’s singles, men’s doubles, and junior boys’ events at the French Open which starts on Sunday.
Frances Tiafoe, who has surged up the ATP rankings this year to a career high #65 thanks to winning two ATP Challenger titles in Sarasota, FL and Aix-en-Provence, France, respectively, is seeking his second main draw win at a Grand Slam. The 19-year-old recorded his first Grand Slam main draw win over Mikhail Kukuskin at the Australian Open in January. He further built his confidence by pushing 18-time major champion Roger Federer to a first set tie break in the second round of the Miami Open in March. This is Tiafoe’s second main draw appearance at the French Open. His first round opponent is #28 seed Italian Fabio Fognini, a former quarterfinalist at Roland Garros.

Doubles specialist Treat Huey teams up with Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, who was Novak’s Djokovic’s conqueror at the Australian Open. The seven-time ATP title winner will be attempting to improve on his previous best run to the Round of 16 at the French Open as he makes his sixth appearance at the clay court Slam.

Current JTCC students Brian Cernoch and Andrew Fenty have earned spots in the Boys’ singles thanks to a string of excellent results on the ITF junior circuit in 2017. The 17-year-olds have reached career highs of #40 and #67, respectively, in the ITF junior world rankings this year and will both be making their Grand Slam debuts at Roland Garros when the junior event starts on June 4.

“All four JTCC players enter the French Open with high personal expectations based on their promising results so far this year,” said JTCC Senior Director of High Performance Tennis Frank Salazar who has coached all four. “They are all well-prepared to continue their good form in Paris.”
