When JTCC’s Community Outreach Programs GEICO Game On! and Sandy Spring Bank Advantage Prince George’s were put on hold indefinitely in March due to Covid-19 restrictions, JTCC’s coaches bounced back impressively by developing a Virtual Tennis program that attracted 70 players for its inaugural session in September.
JTCC’s Virtual Tennis program is free and open to all youth ages 5-11 in Washington, D.C, and Prince George’s County, MD. Over the course of the 10 weeks, participants learn tennis fundamentals such as footwork, stroke mechanics, and scoring. Players who do not have equipment receive a free racquet and a can of red low-compression tennis balls.
At the completion of the fall program, coaches selected 15 of the most engaged and motivated participants for scholarships to train at JTCC in the Phase 2 program. The Phase 2 program is the next step for players in the JTCC Community Outreach programs to continue learning tennis by participating in an eight-week training session at JTCC. The first group of Phase 2 participants began their training in January.
Simultaneously, JTCC kicked off its second session of the Virtual Tennis program, increasing attendance to 80 participants. With the growth of the program, JTCC incorporated players from its High Performance programs to assist in teaching the classes and to serve as role models for the youth.
JTCC is committed to continuing to serve the community by introducing tennis to underserved youth. For more information on JTCC’s Virtual Tennis Program, click here or contact Ava Todd at atodd@jtcc.org.
