Free Community Champs Programming
Since its inception 14 years ago, free Community Champs (formerly Game On!) Programming has been the vehicle through which JTCC pursues its mission of “Tennis for Everybody,” a commitment to making the sport and its benefits accessible to all regardless of age, ability, or financial situation.
To implement the program, JTCC coaches travel to low-income, diverse neighborhoods and deliver high-quality tennis and academic enrichment lessons. The two goals of Community Champs are to spark students’ passion for tennis and to help students develop social and emotional learning competencies in a fun after-school environment.
At the end of each session, coaches select students who have displayed an enthusiasm for tennis to continue playing on site at JTCC in the Phase 2 program. Phase 2 students participate in 10 free weeks of tennis lessons at JTCC and have the opportunity to enroll in additional classes afterwards.
JTCC partners with a number of other organizations to deliver Community Champs to the community, including the Prince George’s County Police Athletic League and Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation Department.
Low Cost Community Champs
Low-cost Community Champs is available to schools and community organizations in diverse neighborhoods without Title I or equivalent status.
The program curriculum remains the same, focused on students’ overall athleticism and basic tennis fundamentals. Students who participate in low-cost programming are still eligible to participate in Phase 2.
The proceeds from these classes go back into our budget and help to fund free Community Champs programming as well as quality improvement initiatives.
