JTCC’s annual Champions Celebration presented by Life by Dallas True Pop Popcorn raised a record-breaking $630,000 on April 16 to support the organization’s mission of making tennis accessible to players of all backgrounds and abilities throughout the Washington metropolitan area.

More than 450 supporters enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres during the pre-dinner reception while reconnecting with fellow supporters and alumni and celebrating honorees Ray Benton and Denis Kudla for their lasting impact on JTCC.

Alumna Hailey Baptiste stunned Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Open on April 28, becoming the first JTCC alum to defeat a reigning World No. 1.

Having saved six match points, Baptiste sealed her first Top 5 victory in style winning 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) on her first match point with an unreturnable forehand.

Players from JTCC Junior Champs, Champs I, Champs II, and Full-Time Champs programs tried wheelchair tennis for the first time in honor of National Adaptive Sport Day on April 28.

High-level Para Standing athlete Kemit Amon-Lewis was also on court, demonstrating to the group the Para Standing discipline for athletes with physical disabilities who play standing. After representing Para Standing Tennis at the Australian Open All Abilities Day earlier this year, Amon-Lewis brought an elite presence to the day promoting inclusion for all.

After three years of her father feeding her balls, Raveena Kingsley’s passion for tennis was born—but it was time to find a place to elevate her game.

Kingsley joined JTCC at age 10, and from 2009–14, JTCC became more than just a training ground—it became home.

It was a powerhouse March for JTCC alumni on the global stage. Frances Tiafoe surged back into the world top 20 following an ATP 500 final and deep runs in the Sunshine Double, while Hailey Baptiste secured her first Top 10 win en route to a maiden WTA 1000 Quarterfinal and a career-high ranking of No. 33.

The momentum extended across the board with Andrew Fenty reaching consecutive ITF finals, Ayana Akli making her WTA 500 debut, and Robin Montgomery successfully returning to professional competition. Whether at the elite Masters level or the ITF circuit, these athletes continue to showcase the world-class impact of JTCC training.

JTCC is home to the University of Maryland (UMD) women’s varsity tennis team, and it was buzzing with more than 175 spectators wearing black to “Back the Lady Terps” on March 21 as #47 Maryland hosted #22 Wisconsin.
Fans were treated to high-level National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I tennis, witnessing a competitive battle between two teams ranked inside the top 50 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

After opening 2026 with her first Gold Ball at the USTA Winter Nationals, Shristi Selvan returned to the national stage at the Easter Bowl in Indian Wells, CA with the confidence of a champion and the hunger for more.
The 15-year-old didn’t just recreate that sense of déjà vu—she elevated it, returning to the winner’s circle on March 29 and taking it a step further by capturing both Girls’ 16s singles and doubles titles.

A morning of leadership, learning, and tennis came together at JTCC on March 21 as 16 young leaders from the Greater Suburban MD Chapter of Jack and Jill of America stepped into an experience they will not forget.

The visit began with a personal tour led by JTCC CEO Martin Blackman, followed by an energetic clinic led by Blackman and Coach Kenneth, where participants sharpened their skills and experienced JTCC’s training environment.

The spotlight recently shined on JTCC’s community impact which was featured on All Access With Andy Garcia, hosted by the acclaimed actor and filmmaker best known for his iconic roles in The Godfather Part III and Ocean’s Eleven.

Garcia has built a distinguished career highlighting powerful stories and meaningful community impact. His documentary series spotlights organizations making a difference across the nation.

For alumnus Frances Tiafoe, last week marked a significant step toward excellence at the start of the 2026 season when he reached his third ATP 500-level final in Acapulco at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.

The Hyattsville native won four matches en route to his 11th ATP Tour final which included two three-set victories along the way over countrymen Aleksandar Kovacevic and Brandon Nakashima.

JTCC alum Benjamin Kittay is quickly establishing himself on the worldwide professional doubles tour, highlighted by his recent appearance at the Delray Beach Open. The Potomac, MD native made the most of his main draw wild card, reaching the finals in his ATP 250 tournament debut.
“I am just happy to be playing,” Kittay said. “My team and I are trying to get better every week, and it’s been great.”

Sofia Johnson was all smiles February 22 when she secured her first professional title at the ITF W15 Palm Coast in Florida by knocking off #1 seed Thaisa Pedretti, 6-4, 6-2, in straight sets.

From JTCC courts to the world tour, Ryan Colby is making his presence felt.

The 22-year-old has carried his game seamlessly into the professional ranks since turning pro in November with a stellar 19-5 record in that span, most recently reaching the finals at the M15 Palm Coast in FL on February 8.

“Down Under” – literally “under” the bright lights of the Australian Open (AO) – JTCC Para Standing athlete Kemit-Amon Lewis showcased his skills on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.

Lewis competed in a Para Standing Tennis (PST) exhibition during the Grand Slam’s All Abilities Day at Margaret Court Arena on January 27. The appearance came on the heels of his participation in the Oceania Para Standing Tennis Championships several days earlier—to him, the gold standard for international PST competition.

One tournament can change everything on the professional tour, and for Hailey Baptiste, the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open marked that moment.
The JTCC alumna vaulted to a career-high ranking of world #39 on February 9 after her first run to the semifinals of a WTA 500 the week prior.

The 2026 JTCC Champions Celebration will recognize two individuals whose leadership and achievements have profoundly shaped the organization.

Together, the honorees—Ray Benton, JTCC’s longtime Chief Executive Officer, and Denis Kudla, one of the program’s first homegrown professional players and a current member of the JTCC High Performance coaching team—represent more than 30 years of dedication to JTCC’s mission and community.

JTCC Junior wheelchair tennis player Spencer Davis has reached a major milestone, earning a #8 world ranking on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Wheelchair Tennis Tour—placing him among the top 10 Junior wheelchair tennis players and top ranked American in the world.

A high school sophomore and member of JTCC’s High Performance Champs II program, Davis has made steady progress in the last two years training alongside High Performance athletes.
“I have been able to further develop my game and improve different parts of it recently because of JTCC and their outstanding coaches,” said Davis.

Drawing on 10 years of experience as General Manager of USTA Player Development, JTCC CEO Martin Blackman announced that he, along with JTCC President and Director of Coaching Vesa Ponkka, will oversee all of JTCC’s High Performance Training and High Performance Coach Development.

“We will implement a program that reflects the same philosophy and comprehensive training methodology that ushered in a resurgence of American tennis under the direction of USTA Player Development,” said Blackman. “Over the past decade, American tennis experienced its strongest resurgence since the early 1990s, with significant increases in representation across the Top 100, Top 50, Top 20, and Top 10 rankings. This progress was driven by a three-way partnership between USTA Player Development, the 17 USTA Sections, and the private sector.”

JTCC hosted an All-Coaches Integration Training in Building 2 on January 5, bringing coaches and players in the Adaptive programs together for a unique, hands-on learning experience.

Eight players from JTCC Wheelchair and Para Standing programs participated in integrated drills, situations where athletes with and without disabilities are learning tennis together. The players provided real-time feedback to help coaches from the High Performance and Developmental teams learn how to adapt instruction and environments to support every athlete.

It didn’t take long for Shristi Selvan to define excellence in 2026, opening the year with a truly momentous achievement.

The 15-year-old delivered a masterclass performance at the USTA Level 1 Girls’ 16s National Winter Championships in Orlando, FL, capturing the singles title and securing her first Gold Ball with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory over fourth-seeded Olivia Lin in the final.

What began more than a decade ago in Orange Ball programming on JTCC courts has now culminated in two players competing on one of the premier stages in Junior tennis. This week, Shristi Selvan (15) and Nico Pedraza (16) are competing in the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl, a testament from the early days when both trained in the JTCC Orange Ball programs.

High Performance player Nico Pedraza led a strong JTCC contingent at the USTA Level 1 National Indoor Championships that concluded on December 1, earning a coveted Silver Ball for reaching the finals in the Boys’ 16s Doubles division. This was Pedraza’s fifth career National Ball in Junior competition.

“My partner and I played really well together and had some good chemistry. We complement each other’s games really well,” Pedraza stated. “We had some long days where we ended up playing doubles later in the afternoon, so to stay focused and have high energy late in the day really gave us the edge.”

Holidays are a time for returning home and reconnecting with family and friends, and at JTCC, this is no exception. The building was buzzing the week of November 17 with more than 15 alumni returning to the courts to train together again where their journeys began.

Adding to the excitement, world #9 Ben Shelton stopped by for an energetic practice with alumnus Frances Tiafoe as the two pushed each other for more than three hours.

More than 150 athletes and Unified teammates representing 16 Maryland high school teams competed indoors at JTCC on November 11 in the Special Olympics Maryland Unified Tennis High School State Championships.

Unified Tennis features participants with and without intellectual disabilities and includes various levels of tennis experience. Athletes are assigned to groups of four to compete in round robin doubles based on skill levels. Each team includes a player with and a player without an intellectual disability.

No amount of rain could dampen Ryan Colby’s spirits as the JTCC and Laurel Springs alumnus turned a weather-interrupted week into a career breakthrough.

The Virginia native captured his first professional title November 9 at the M15 Orlando tournament on the USTA Pro Circuit.

JTCC made history as one of the first tennis centers in the U.S. to hire a full-time Adaptive Tennis Program Manager. We spoke with Gabby Hesse, Head of Wheelchair & Adaptive about what “defining excellence” means through adaptive sport and how JTCC is changing what’s possible for athletes of all abilities.

As part of Coach Appreciation Month, Gabby Hesse, JTCC’s Head of Wheelchair & Adaptive Tennis, was recently featured on FOX 5 DC’s Live Zone.

In the short segment, Gabby discussed JTCC’s mission to make the sport accessible for players of all abilities and the growing impact of inclusive programming that brings athletes together on and off the court. Her message underscored how great coaches not only build skills on the court, but also shape character, confidence, and community beyond it.

After a decade as General Manager of USTA Player Development, Martin Blackman has returned to his roots in Junior tennis to serve as CEO of JTCC, where he was Director of Tennis from 2004-08.

Blackman, whose initiatives at the USTA transformed American tennis with more American players ranked in the Top 10, 20, and 50 than at any point since the mid-1990s, brings a community-centered focus to JTCC.

Fifteen-year-old High Performance player Shristi Selvan received the surprise of a lifetime when she was named the second recipient of the Keith Robert Larson Scholarship fund which provides need-based scholarships for players committed to excellence on and off the court.

“I’m very grateful for this, and it will help me achieve my dreams in the future at the highest level,” Selvan stated. “I will continue to strive for top 10 National rankings in the Girls’ 16s & 18s.”

JTCC’s commitment to “Tennis for Everybody” was highlighted by the Tennis Channel on September 13, showcasing the impact of JTCC’s Adaptive Tennis program which serves more than 260 players of all ages and abilities.

From wheelchair athlete Spencer Davis to Marine veteran Gary Boshoff, the story highlights how JTCC empowers players through personalized coaching, inclusive programming, and the philosophy of “reciprocal mentorship.”

After 17 years of unwavering commitment and dedicated service, Ray Benton announced his retirement from Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) effective September 30 and was honored with the naming of the “Ray & Nina Benton Walk of Fame.”

Following the naming ceremony on September 22, a catered lunch outside overlooking the courts in perfect “tennis weather” provided the ideal setting for JTCC staff to extoll Benton’s leadership while reminiscing and sharing stories from nearly two decades of fond memories.

More than 70 NCAA Division I female athletes from colleges and universities in the Mid-Atlantic region enjoyed abundant sunshine and pristine tennis weather September 19-21 at JTCC in the ninth Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Bedford Cup.

Players from Coppin State University, Delaware State University, George Mason University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, Loyola University Maryland, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, University of Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth University, and West Virginia University competed in singles and doubles matches in draws based on their World Tennis Number (WTN).

Four JTCC High Performance players Shristi Selvan, Stefanie Smart-Abbey, Shaun Fernando, and Yared Alfred had a week to remember when they took part in the USTA Foundation Haber Career Week/Amex Cup.

Held from August 30 – September 5, the prestigious program gave student-athletes the opportunity to combine on-court development with enriching off-court learning experiences in New York City. JTCC players joined 24 peers from National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) chapters across the country for a week filled with tennis, education, and career exploration.

On September 10, JTCC proudly unveiled a plaque above the entrance to Building One for the JTCC Keith Robert Larson Scholarship Fund- honoring a legacy of passion, resilience, and community.

Keith was a longtime member and an enthusiastic supporter of JTCC programs, and although he is no longer able to play tennis, his passion for the game lives on.

JTCC is excited to announce that Martin Blackman has been named Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1, 2025.

Blackman brings more than two decades of leadership experience in high-performance tennis development, including a decade as General Manager of USTA Player Development, where he led initiatives that transformed American tennis. His team’s efforts helped drive a resurgence in U.S. tennis, with the past three years reflecting more American players ranked in the Top 10, 20, and 50 than at any point since the mid-1990s.

Four rising stars from across the DMV represented JTCC and earned a moment in the spotlight on July 27, capturing first place at the Stars of Tomorrow Tournament held at Rock Creek Tennis Center—the same courts where the Mubadala Citi DC Open professionals competed. 

Accompanied by JTCC Director of Junior Champions Mira Vlcek, the team of Milan Smith (DC), Chloe Stillwagon (MD), Knowlton Atterbeary (MD), and Mia Robles (VA) competed in the 10U Green Dot division. The tournament featured a unique team format: co-ed doubles matches played in a round-robin structure, with a singles tiebreaker if matches were tied.

JTCC went undefeated in Group 2 play, advancing to face the winners of Group 1 in the championship match. With strong teamwork and clutch performances in tight moments, they came out on top to claim the title.

JTCC was buzzing with energy this month hosting three film crews for exciting projects.

High Performance player Nicholas Mekhael led the JTCC contingent of players competing July 6-13 at the Level 1 USTA National Clay Court Championships, earning a coveted Bronze Ball for his 3rd place finish in the Boys’ 18s Singles division in Delray Beach, FL. Mekhael also reached the Boys’ 18s doubles semifinals, ultimately finishing fourth, capping off a standout week of elite-level play.

JTCC is excited to announce the appointment of Andrew “Andy” Rathmann-Noonan as Chief Development Officer.  Andy brings a wealth of experience, a deep passion for tennis, and a strong commitment to our mission.

Rathmann-Noonan previously served as president of the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation, where he was responsible for creating and executing the organization’s fundraising efforts and managing the five-person development team. During his tenure, Rathmann-Noonan helped grow annual revenue from $100,000 to $2,000,000 while collaborating with several partners, including the White House.

JTCC alumna Kallista Liu capped her standout college career by being named the ITA National Most Improved Player of the Year, recognizing her steady rise to the top of collegiate tennis at the University of Maryland.

“Kallista’s journey is the epitome of this award,” said Maryland Head Coach Katie Dougherty. “She came in playing No. 6 singles and left playing No. 1 as a unanimous All-Big Ten selection. After not cracking the doubles lineup her first two years, she finished playing No.1 and ranked nationally. This is a huge and well-deserved honor.”

Breaking barriers on and off the courts, two JTCC adaptive tennis players were featured in a Washington Post article this past Friday documenting their selection for their high schools’ tennis teams this year.

A testament to their exceptional skill and unyielding determination, freshmen Spencer Davis and Maya Gareri have joined their respective teams at Langley High School in McLean, VA, and Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD, since the season began earlier this spring.

Alumnus Frances Tiafoe made headlines in Paris with four consecutive straight set victories enroute to his first appearance in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.

The #15 seed was joined by compatriot Tommy Paul marking the first time since 1996 that there were two American men in the final eight. Both players lost in quarterfinal encounters with clay court specialists Lorenzo Musetti and Carlos Alcaraz, respectively.

Alumna Hailey Baptiste is catapulting her career to new heights after a run to the Round of 16 at Roland Garros—her best result ever at a Grand Slam.

Hailey starting making waves in the first round with an upset victory over #23 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, followed by wins over Nao Hibino and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. She has surged from a previous career-high of #98 to #70—and currently sits at #58 in the live rankings—securing entry into the highest level of WTA Tournaments and setting the stage for success at Wimbledon in the main draw four weeks from now. 

For most of his life, all Denis Kudla has known is playing tennis.

From a precocious Junior player who ascended to the #3  ITF World Junior ranking after winning the prestigious Orange Bowl 16’s, to a respected tennis professional whose 16-year career included representing the USA at the Rio Olympics and Davis Cup, Kudla and tennis have been inseparable. 

Ray Benton has informed the Board of Directors of his intention to retire as CEO and Board member of the Junior Tennis Championship Center (JTCC) as of December 31, 2025.

Benton was recruited in 2008 to lead JTCC by founder Ken Brody whose vision was to build JTCC into an organization that uses the game of tennis to better lives with a focus on developing a world-class training program that produces champions both on and off the court.

JTCC is proud to announce that Head of Wheelchair and Adaptive Tennis Gabby Hesse has been named to the USTA Wheelchair tennis national development team.

JTCC was transformed for an unforgettable evening on April 29 to salute tennis visionaries Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss at the GEICO Champions Celebration presented by Amazon, Umana Family, & Erin and Robert Thomson.

JTCC is excited to announce the opening of its first location in Virginia at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles Hotel in Chantilly, VA.

Ten JTCC High Performance players competed in March in the prestigious USTA Level 1 FILA Easter Bowl tournament in Indian Wells, CA. Often referred to as the “Super Bowl of Junior Tennis,” the Easter Bowl is known for jumpstarting the careers of Hall of Famers Andre Agassi, Tracy Austin, John McEnroe, and JTCC alumnus and former world #10 Frances Tiafoe.

“Houston we have a problem” applies only to Frances Tiafoe’s early round opponents in the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, TX because the Hyattsville native continues to destroy opponents on his way to three consecutive finals at the ATP 250 event.

The Para Standing Championships held March 1-2 brought together 15 exceptional athletes from the United States and Chile and featured a remarkable display of talent across multiple competitive categories including Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles.

For two and a half weeks, JTCC Director of International Operations Asaf Yamin embarked on an incredible journey to China, bringing the JTCC training philosophy and High Performance mindset to the next generation of tennis players. His mission was to share JTCC coaching principles with players and coaches across China while building lasting connections within the international tennis community.

Kemit-Amon Lewis’s journey back to competitive tennis is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the power of community. His connection with Wilson and JTCC has been instrumental in his return to the sport, allowing him to push past barriers and redefine what is possible in Para Standing tennis.

In a moment that will be etched in University of Virginia tennis history, freshman and JTCC alumnus Stiles Brockett delivered a heroic performance to clinch the decisive point in the Cavaliers’ thrilling 4-3 upset over #1-ranked University of Texas on February 2.

JTCC alumnus Jakob Esterowitz has transformed his skills on the court into a groundbreaking venture off the court. Jakob founded Orobor, a company repurposing old tennis strings into sustainable polyester pellets. His journey reflects the unique blend of athletic and personal growth fostered at JTCC.

JTCC High Performance Player Shristi Selvan set a personal goal in 2024 to become a “top 25 player in the country” in Girls’ 14s by the end of 2025. Just 30 days into the new year, Selvan now can aim even higher, having now achieved a career-high USTA national ranking of #15.

At 15-years-old, Kalista Papadopoulos is quickly making a name for herself in the tennis world. A relative newcomer to competitive tennis, Kalista began taking the sport seriously only after COVID-19 disrupted her involvement in other team sports such as lacrosse and field hockey. What started as casual rallies with her older brother Jordan during the pandemic has now evolved into a dedicated pursuit of excellence on the court.

After an outstanding junior and professional career that left an indelible mark on the sport, JTCC alumnus Denis Kudla has officially retired from tennis after an impressive 14 years on the tour.

Throughout the year, JTCC participants and alumni continued to leave inspirational memories for the entire community.

A record number of nearly 300 students ages 5-18 participated in nine weeks of JTCC’s Community Champs (formerly Game On!) Session I learning tennis fundamentals and gaining invaluable life skills in a rewarding experience filled with rallies, laughter, and growth.

JTCC High Performance Players Reiley Rhodes and Kalista Papadopoulos both captured their first Junior ITF titles at the J60 Arequipa Open that took place last month in Peru.

Just one month after JTCC alumni Ayana Akli and William Woodall secured their first professional doubles titles, alumnus Andrew Fenty followed suit on November 10, securing his maiden pro crown at an ITF M15 tournament in Guatemala.

After attaining the status as one of the most coveted Juniors in the nation, JTCC High Performance player Kase Schinnerer has chosen the University of North Carolina as his next destination to pursue his athletic and academic dreams.

More than 6,500 miles apart, two JTCC alumni experienced euphoria on October 6 by claiming their first professional doubles titles.

Eighteen proud Military Veterans came together September 20-22 to compete in the first JTCC Veterans Tennis Championships for a memorable weekend dedicated to honoring those who have served our country.

Eighty-two NCAA Division I female players from 11 area universities enjoyed abundant sunshine and perfect tennis weather September 13-15 at JTCC in the eighth Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Bedford Cup.

In preparation for the Junior Boys’ and Girls’ US Open, 200 of the Top Junior players in the world from 35 different countries battled at JTCC and competed in the J300 ITF Wayne K. Curry Prince George’s County International Junior Tennis Championships presented by Laurel Springs School.

Demonstrating the skills that make him one of the world’s top players, JTCC alumnus Frances Tiafoe advanced to the US Open semifinals for the second time in three years earning him the distinction of being the only American man to reach the semifinals two times since 2000.

JTCC players certainly didn’t let any grass grow under their feet at Wimbledon as three alumni raced to victories on the hallowed grass courts. Robin Montgomery fought through three matches in qualifying to earn her first entry into the women’s singles main draw. She followed up with an impressive first round defeat of Olivia Gadecki, 6-4, 6-4, to achieve a personal milestone winning her first Grand Slam main draw match.

After a fun-filled session learning the game of tennis, 262 students, ages 6-12, graduated from the Spring Game On! session that wrapped up June 9.

JTCC High Performance Coach Ali Agnamba made history earlier this month by training the Togolese women’s team as they prepared for their country’s first appearance in the Billie Jean King Cup!

Three former JTCC players and two alumni had strong showings at the NCAA Division I Championships in Stillwater, OK recently, with Alexa Noel capturing the Women’s Singles Championship. Noel rallied from a set and 3-1 down to capture the title with an impressive 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 come-back victory over Georgia’s Anastasiia Lopata.

Thirteen JTCC graduates in attendance were dressed to impress in front of the more than 100 proud parents, families, alumni, and friends who gathered in the JTCC lobby for the May 29 graduation ceremony for the Class of 2024. The new alumni received their diplomas and portraits which will hang on the JTCC Walk of Fame hallway. This year’s class included four additional graduates who were unable to attend. The group joined the more than 330 other successful alumni.

Imani Jean’s freshman season at Howard University was memorable and one for the history books. The JTCC alumna, who finished her first collegiate season 13-3 overall in singles, was recognized for her stellar performance being named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s (MEAC) 2024 Rookie of the Year and was a MEAC First Team selection.

JTCC was recognized on April 14 as the National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) Chapter of the Year during the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Annual Conference in Orlando, FL. For its work specifically with under-served youth, JTCC was selected from among more than 250 NJTL chapters nationwide as the NJTL of the Year for positively impacting youth through the powerful combination of tennis and education.

JTCC was transformed for an unforgettable evening on April 10 to salute JTCC’s 25th Anniversary honoring alumnus Frances Tiafoe and University of Maryland President Darryll Pines at the GEICO Champions Celebration presented by Amazon and the Bisnow Family.

JTCC is home to the University of Maryland (UMD) women’s varsity tennis team, and it was jam-packed with more than 100 spectators wearing black to “Black Out” the bubble on March 2 when the Lady Terps took on Liberty University. Fans cheered outstanding National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I tennis and were delighted at the outcome when Maryland cruised to a 4-0 shutout victory in front of the energetic crowd.

Leaving behind her family and hometown of Yonkers, NY, Stefanie Smart-Abbey, at 13-years-old joined JTCC’s Full-Time High Performance program in late 2022 to pursue her dream to be the best player she could be. Smart-Abbey’s father, a seasoned tennis coach from Ghana, taught his 10-year-old daughter how to play tennis. She began making her mark at a young age in local tournaments by holding her own and competing in older age groups despite having only two years of tennis experience.

With more than 60 enthusiastic children and adults engaged in interactive tennis drills, the JTCC Winter Tennis Festival held on the indoor courts on February 3 was a smashing success to kicking off the first of four free festivals held throughout the year. During the two-hour free event led by JTCC coaches and assisted by volunteers from the University of Maryland Men’s Club Lacrosse team, the players also participated in team-building activities to improve balance and coordination and enjoyed complimentary snacks.

The dreams of seven hard-working student-athletes have been fulfilled with their commitments to play college tennis at prestigious institutions in the fall. A signing day ceremony was held at JTCC on Thursday, January 11, with players, family members, and media in attendance.

The past and present collided during winter break at JTCC when several alumni returned from college to train together with current High Performance players. The holiday training sessions featured thrilling rallies, powerful serves, and a joyful camaraderie that showcased the success of the JTCC pathway.

The tennis journey of JTCC MedStar athlete Madeleine-Camille Preuninger was transformed overnight when she was the surprise recipient of a free custom-fit sports wheelchair six months ago. The Hartford, a leading provider of disability insurance that has dedicated itself for the past 30 years to making adaptive sports and equipment more accessible, awarded the wheelchair to Preuninger making an indelible impact on the tennis enthusiast who began playing at JTCC in 2021.

More than 100 players, staff, and spectators packed the JTCC lobby on November 17 for the Arthur Ashe Legacy Foundation at UCLA’s panel discussion celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ashe’s first visit to South Africa. In 1973, Ashe became the first Black professional tennis player to compete in South Africa’s National Championships.

JTCC High Performance Coach Priyana Kalita’s story is one of resilience and determination. Born in the bustling streets of Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, India, Kalita grew up amidst continual unrest due to fighting over the India/Bangladesh border 150 miles from her home.

Thirty-two of the top wheelchair tennis players in the nation competed earlier this month in the USTA L4 JTCC Wheelchair Tennis Championships presented by MedStar NRH. The largest wheelchair tournament in program history with 32 competitors, the event featured 16 JTCC/MedStar players, including 13-year-old Spencer Davis, 38-year-old Bryce Doody, and 48-year-old Michael Flores, who were all crowned champions in their respective brackets.

For JTCC High Performance players Kase and Erik Schinnerer, their dominance on the court shouldn’t be a surprise. Born into a family of athletes, with their mother Lessia, a former professional tennis player, and their father Dan, a four-year letter winner at Yale University, the Schinnerer brothers have quickly forged an identity of their own at JTCC.

JTCC High Performance player Stiles Brockett started training at JTCC in 2020 with a goal “to become the best player he could be”. Three years later, Brockett not only is one of the country’s best junior players and Boys 16 National champion, but he recently verbally committed to join one of the best collegiate programs in the country at the University of Virginia.

With 27 enthusiastic JTCC supporters cheering wildly at courtside, it was a day of many “firsts” for Bob Bryan and Team USA as they defeated Croatia 2-1 in the opening match of the 2023 Davis Cup Finals Group Stage in Split, Croatia.

JTCC Para Standing players Nicky Maxwell and Ken ‘Rocket’ Rodriguez had the opportunity of their lifetime when the duo competed in a Para Standing Doubles match in Arthur Ashe Stadium preceding the US Open Women’s Singles Final on September 9.

JTCC alumnus Frances Tiafoe’s outstanding run at the 2023 US Open not only showcased his immense talent, but his continued ascent in the world of professional tennis. With his impressive quarterfinal appearance, Tiafoe solidified his status as one of the top players on the global ATP Tour.

The extreme heat couldn’t stop the excitement that emanated from Pershing Square Stadium court at JTCC on Thursday, July 27 when Frances Tiafoe and the USTA Foundation (USTAF) announced the launch of the Frances Tiafoe Fund. Hundreds of JTCC supporters filled the court to applaud the creation of the Frances Tiafoe Fund whose mission is to make tennis more accessible to youth in Prince George’s County and underserved communities nationwide.
